Vedic astrology, or Jyotish, offers a profound system for understanding the timeline of our lives, known as the Dasha system. Among the various dasha systems, the Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used and accurate for predicting the timing of life events. Our free Mahadasha Calculator is a powerful tool that allows you to generate your complete dasha sequence, helping you understand which planetary energies are influencing your life right now and what to expect in the future.
The Vimshottari Dasha system is a 120-year cycle of planetary periods, where each of the nine grahas (seven planets plus the two lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu) rules over a specific period of a person's life. The main period is called the Mahadasha (major period). Each Mahadasha is further subdivided into nine Antardashas (sub-periods), and each Antardasha is divided into nine Pratyantardashas (sub-sub-periods).
This system acts like a celestial clock. The planet ruling the current dasha period (Mahadasha, Antardasha, etc.) becomes highly activated and delivers the results of its placement in your birth chart. By using a dasha analysis tool, you can see which "cosmic flavor" is currently coloring your experiences.
The starting point of your Vimshottari Dasha sequence is determined by the position of the Moon at the time of your birth. Specifically, it depends on the Nakshatra (lunar mansion) in which your Moon was placed. Each of the 27 Nakshatras is ruled by one of the nine planets. The planet ruling the Nakshatra of your birth Moon will be your first Mahadasha lord. The remaining duration of this first dasha is calculated based on how much of the Nakshatra the Moon had already traversed at birth. After that, the dashas follow a fixed sequence:
Ketu (7 yrs) → Venus (20 yrs) → Sun (6 yrs) → Moon (10 yrs) → Mars (7 yrs) → Rahu (18 yrs) → Jupiter (16 yrs) → Saturn (19 yrs) → Mercury (17 yrs)

This calculator uses the widely accepted Lahiri ayanamsa and the Vimshottari Dasha system, which are standard in Vedic astrology. The accuracy of the result depends entirely on the accuracy of the birth time you provide. Even a few minutes' difference in birth time can shift the dasha periods.
An exact birth time is highly recommended for an accurate dasha calculation. If you don't have it, you can try entering 12:00 PM, but be aware that the start and end dates of the dashas, especially the initial one, may not be precise. The overall sequence will remain the same.
